When an electric motor has spent years operating under demanding conditions, replacement often seems like the only logical solution. In reality, however, a thorough overhaul can often deliver a very different outcome.
We recently demonstrated this once again during an extensive refurbishment project for EDR Antwerp Shipyard. Working on a motor aboard Hapag-Lloyd’s Ontario Express, our specialists carried out a rebuild that went far beyond routine maintenance.
More Than a Standard Overhaul
From the moment the motor arrived at our workshop, it was clear that this project would involve much more than a technical inspection or the replacement of a few worn components.
The motor was completely dismantled to allow every component to be individually inspected. It then underwent a thorough cleaning process to remove dirt, dust, corrosion and years of accumulated deposits.
Once cleaned, the electrical components received special attention. The windings were completely rewound to restore the motor’s performance and reliability. All critical components were inspected, repaired where necessary and reassembled according to strict quality standards.
Back in Top Condition, Inside and Out
Technical performance is essential, but the protection of the motor also plays a major role in its service life.
After the mechanical and electrical refurbishment was completed, the motor received a new protective coating. The result is not only a professional-looking motor, but also improved protection against the harsh conditions marine installations face every day.
A Second Life for Critical Drives
The final result speaks for itself. What arrived as a heavily used motor with years of service behind it left our workshop looking remarkably close to new.
