From Copying to Improving

For Vanhees Metalen, we manufactured a new custom chain sprocket based on an existing component. At first glance, it looked like a straightforward request: make an identical replacement. But once we examined the original part, we noticed something.

Dirt was building up between the sprocket teeth underneath the chain. Over time, this caused recurring issues and was the main reason why the original design was generating complaints.

Instead of simply reproducing the part, we asked ourselves a simple question: can we make it better?

We slightly modified the design by adding an angled surface where the dirt tended to collect. It is a small change, but one with a clear purpose. As the sprocket rotates, the chain tension now helps push dirt away instead of allowing it to accumulate.

The new sprocket was then manufactured using our CNC turning and milling capabilities. Rather than creating an exact copy, we produced an improved version based on real-world experience and practical use.

Because added value is not always about designing something completely new. Sometimes it comes from taking a closer look, understanding the problem, and making a small improvement that delivers a lasting result.
